LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE MARINE UNIT

The Marine Unit is a 50-person part time seasonal unit with openings for a Deputy and a maintenance supervisor.  Assignments include Lake Michigan, Inland waterways and the Chain of Lakes, which is the second busiest inland waterway system in the country. 

Responsibilities include the enforcement of state laws, local and county ordinances, United States Coast Guard regulations and to promote safe boating.  There is an emphasis on OUI, (operating watercraft under the influence) enforcement.  The base of operations is in Fox Lake Illinois.

Hiring procedures include application, background check, doctor's physical (stress test for applicants over the age of 40) and swim test (USCG class 3 swim test).  Applicants can be retired or current State of Illinois certified Police Officers.  Applicants must be available for 6 shifts per month.  Some shifts must be weekend shifts.  Training begins in March.  Shift work begins the first weekend of May through October. 

Compensation is $16.60 per hour for the Maintenance Supervisor and $16.60 for the Marine Unit Deputy.
