More Thanks for a Job Well Done

May 24, 2012

First, the City took the unusual position that Officers could not request to be credited with compensatory time for any overtime that they worked during the NATO Summit knowing that this was a clear violation of our contract.

Now, after our Mayor, Superintendent, and the citizens of Chicago have heaped praise upon Chicago Police Officers for their excellent work at the NATO Summit, the City has taken the position that Officers are not entitled to compensation for working a sixth or seventh consecutive day during a single calendar week.

The wording of Section 20.3 of our contract could not be any more unambiguous. It states: An officer who is in pay status for six (6) or seven (7) consecutive days within the pay period Sunday through Saturday will be compensated at the rate of time-and-one-half for work performed on the sixth (6th) day and seventh (7th) day.

A class action grievance has already been filed by the Lodge on behalf of any Officer who is entitled to this compensation. Officers need to do nothing more than submit a slip to request compensation and keep anecdotal records. Individual grievances do not need to be filed.
