10 Tips for Staying Sober During the Holidays
The holiday season can be joyful—but for many, it also brings up stress, loneliness, and memories that make staying sober more challenging. Whether you’re in recovery or supporting someone who is, it’s important to have a plan and stay grounded.
Here are 10 ways to protect your sobriety and prioritize your mental health this holiday season:
1. Remember H.A.L.T.
Make sure your basic needs are met. When you’re Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired, you’re more vulnerable to cravings. Eat regularly, get enough sleep, move your body, and reach out for connection.
2. Make Sobriety a Priority
Attend No Cop Out AA meetings or find local support groups that keep you connected and accountable.
3. Practice Gratitude
Write down three things you’re grateful for—your health, your progress, or the people supporting you. A gratitude mindset can help prevent relapse.
4. Volunteer or Give Back
Service work in your church or community can reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem by shifting focus away from personal struggles.
5. Meditate or Get Outside
Exercise, fresh air, and mindfulness activities reduce stress and help quiet the mind.
6. Write a Support List
Make a list of people you can reach out to if you're feeling low or tempted. Connection is key—don’t isolate.
7. Plan Ahead
If you know a situation may trigger cravings, have a backup plan. Call your sponsor or a trusted person for support.
8. Stay in Touch with E.A.P.
The Chicago Police Department’s Professional Counseling Division is here to help. Reach out to one of their locations for counseling and support.
9. Use the Cordico Wellness App
It’s a helpful, confidential resource for you and your family—available for download anytime.
10. Take Care of Your Body and Mind
The holidays can mean overtime and late nights. Prioritize rest, hydration, and recovery so you can feel your best.
You’re not alone—and support is always within reach.
